6 Cleaning Tips Every Pet Owner Should Know
Tip 01
Clean Pet Water Bowls Every Day
That slippery film inside your pet’s water bowl is biofilm — a bacterial colony that forms within 24–48 hours. Rinse and scrub with dish soap daily. Choose stainless steel or ceramic over plastic: plastic scratches harbor bacteria that soap can’t reach. Once a week, soak in diluted white vinegar, rinse well, and refill with fresh water.
Tip 02
Wash Food Bowls After Every Meal
Wet pet food dries and crusts fast, and dry kibble leaves an oily residue. Both invite bacteria and attract insects. Wash food bowls with hot water and dish soap after every meal. If you have a dishwasher, run it on a hot cycle daily. If you have multiple pets, use separate bowls to avoid cross-contamination.
Tip 03
Wash Pet Beds & Blankets Monthly
Pet beds accumulate dander, dead skin cells, natural oils, and hair fast — even when they look clean. Wash bedding at least once a month using an unscented, pet-safe detergent. Skip fabric softener (it traps odors long-term). Dry thoroughly on high heat to kill dust mites. Your guests will notice the difference before you do.
Tip 04
Stay Ahead of Pet Hair
Pet hair embeds deep into carpet fibers and upholstery. Vacuum carpets at least twice a week in pet homes. For furniture, a damp rubber glove dragged across fabric pulls hair to the surface faster than a lint roller. A dry squeegee on carpet works the same way. Regular grooming reduces shedding at the source — less hair in the air, less hair on your floors.
Tip 05
Neutralize Pet Odors — Don’t Just Mask Them
Air fresheners mask pet odors temporarily. Enzymatic cleaners break them down permanently. For accidents, use an enzymatic cleaner like Nature’s Miracle—the enzymes digest the organic compounds that cause the smell. For general odor, sprinkle baking soda on carpets, let sit 30 minutes, then vacuum. Never use ammonia-based cleaners: they smell like urine to cats and can trigger repeat accidents in the same spot.
Tip 06
Use Pet-Safe Cleaning Products
Many common cleaners are toxic to pets: bleach, ammonia, phenols (found in many pine-scented products), and formaldehyde. Safe alternatives include diluted dish soap, white vinegar, baking soda, and low-concentration hydrogen peroxide. Always ventilate rooms well and let surfaces dry completely before letting pets back in. When in doubt, look for the EPA Safer Choice label on the bottle.
